Julia Sumerling

Underwater Cinematographer and Photographer

Julia Sumerling has been working in the remote regions of The Great Barrier Reef and The Coral Sea since 1999 and completed over 10,000 dives, filming and photographing in the region.

Having grown up around the ocean and studied commercial photography, it has been a natural progression for Julia to work full time as an underwater videographer/photographer since 2002.

Julia has worked for Mike Ball Dive Expeditions for 14 years as the expedition photographer and has had many opportunities to film many of the remote shipwrecks on The Great Barrier Reef, The Coral Sea and The Torres Straits on specialty wreck expeditions.

In 2017, she started working for a marine archeology organization, Silentworld Foundation, as their expedition photographer. They made successful shipwreck discoveries in the Southern Coral Sea, found new methods for finding shipwrecks, known as Black Reefs, and went on to dive the wreck of The Bounty and other wrecks at The Pitcairn Island group. In December 2018 they explored the Far Northern Coral Sea more discoveries were made.

Julia’s talk will cover the shipwrecks that were explored in remote places that are often very hard to get to for most divers, on expeditions from her time working on Spoilsport, Silentworld, in conjunction with The Australian National Maritime Museum.
